As most of you may know, Further Shore takes a rest in the deep winter months to reflect on the past year and envision plans for the new one. Reflections of last year include an amazing and successful Bone Dance! Please check out photos on our blog! A big "Thank You" to Jim Torson for service as our event photographer. While you are browsing, visit the home page to watch a short video introducing you to our TLC Client Support Program and Wayne's House. With your generous support we continue to fulfill our mission for these and other TLC Clients.

We are excited to be planning the "Naturally Caring TLC for Care Givers Series" from April - November at the Joe Montoya Senior Center. We will kick off the Series on April 18th. We will also add a monthly Support and Discussion Group with a focus on helpful navigational strategies for families in transition. Watch for details about both these programs in February!

We are most grateful to welcome Meg Leander to our team as my co-Koala Bear! "Koala Bear" is our playful name for someone who serves others as a "Quality of Life Advocate". Meg will assist me with Care Planning and Advocacy for our TLC clients. She is also be available to offer Llumination Quest facilitation in the comfort of YOUR home. Thank you, Taverna Greek Grill for generously hosting a fund raiser last week! Thank you, to all who came out to dine and enjoy the fun and food. We raised $200 that will help us to support our TLC Clients, programs at Wayne's House and our Free workshops for Care Givers! OPA!

FREE Senior & Caregiver Discussion Series: On Friday, Aug. 12^th, Aleia O’Reilly will be presenting a meaningful and interactive workshop on stress reduction entitled “Nip It in the Bud.” The workshop begins at 9:30 and is FREE and is held at the Joe Montoya Senior Center (formerly the Thorpe Senior Center).

On Wednesday, August 17th join us for Naturally Caring TLC for Care Givers Workshop #5 "Create Your Own Fabulous Fast Food." Learn time and energy saving tips so you can create delicious healthy, nutritious, and inexpensive "grab and go" meals! Enjoy sampling the food prepared by Michele Lytle, Personal Chef.The workshop is from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Joe Montoya Senior in the arts and crafts room. FREE to the public.

Join us for Naturally Caring - TLC for Care Givers Workshop #4 "Identifying Family Based Strength and Healing for Challenges". Your presenter is Meg Leander, Patient Care Specialist for Flagstaff Community Hospice. The program is held on Wednesday, July 20th from 3-5 p.m. at the Joe Montoya Senior & Community Center (formerly the Thorpe Senior Center) 245 Thorpe Road. This workshop is FREE to the public and funded in part by the Arizona & Flagstaff Community Foundations, Flagstaff Medical Center and the Forest Highlands Foundation.

Summer Fund Raiser at Taverna! If you like Greek food and a great atmosphere, come on out to Taverna Greek Grill 2420 S. Woodlands Blvd. (213-9994) any time on Wednesday, August 3rd (Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner until last call). On that day only, Taverna will donate 15% of their total sales to Further Shore! All you have to do is present the Taverna flier (you can download it here) or tell your server that you are there to support Further Shore Programs.

We are on the lookout for 20 Table Captains to help us fill the ballroom at the Radisson Woodlands hotel for "That's Life - A Bone Dance"! This, our 6th Annual Gala will be held from 6-11 p.m. on October 29th. Russell Mann will serve as our Master of Ceremonies with a Live Auction and dance music by Jimmy DeBlois and SPOKES! Table Captains responsibilities include purchasing a ticket and inviting 7 friends to do the same. Table Captains will enjoy a late Summer Garden Party Reception and be honored in the event program. TV Raffle - Chuck and VTara Ruscher have organized a Raffle to help raise money for the TLC Client Support Program. The prize is a Sony KDL-46EX720 46" BRAVIA EX720 Series 3D LED Backlit LCD TV that retails for $1750! (Special Thanks to Sears for supporting the cause). Tickets are $20 each; $50 for 3; and $100 for 7. Only 350 tickets will be sold! The Prize Winner will be pulled at the Bone Dance on October 29th and you don't need to be present to win. In Loving Memory

On behalf of the Further Shore board and practitioners, I would like to offer sincere sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Steve Stubenrauch, OMD who passed away on June 10, 2011. His memorial service was held yesterday at Unity of Flagstaff and was attended by so many of his patients, friends, family and colleagues. I want to take time to share with you, who may have known Steve, but not heard the news and for those who knew, but could not attend the service.

Dr. Steve was widely known in our community for his "living out loud" ways, his brilliant mind and wacky sense of humor. He had a stroke 18 months ago and came back to life with rehab, herbs, acupuncture and the loving support of many healers. He liked to say he "got his second chance" to live a little and was grateful to be able to walk, talk, bike, drive, and treat patients again after the stroke. His children, Amy and Tara were flower girls at our wedding in August of 1993. They are now beautiful young ladies. Amy, is 28 and the mother of a 3 year old Scarlett; she is also carrying a baby boy due on July 15th. Both girls were the apples of Steve's eye. Wayne Methios (one of Steve's "two best friends named Wayne") read letters written by Amy and Tara to their dad at the service yesterday. It was clear by their words that they held him in the highest regard as well. Both expressed a wish that he would have remained with us longer than his 54 years. His 55th birthday would be today, Summer Solstice.

Steve loved all kinds of music and especially the Moody Blues. He was known for doing karaoke whenever the opportunity arose and I personally witnessed his bursting into spontaneous songs like "Brown Eyed Girl" (for his daughter, Tara) or "Tuesday Afternoon" (if it happened to be a Friday). He was a world class chess player and often would do benefit chess matches to raise money for nonprofits locally, successfully playing (and winning) as many as 100 boards at a time. He was always laughing, joking and talking a mile a minute. He loved Star Trek and all things science fiction. Just a few weeks ago Steve got to go to the Sci-Fi convention in Phoenix where he heard one of his heroes, Leonard Nimoy, speak.

First and foremost Dr. Steve was a healer. Many of his colleagues were present at the memorial and we were reminded of his tireless effort to bring education, healing and joy to the community through Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and herbal therapies. When Rev. Konrad Kaserer asked how many present had been on the receiving end of Steve's needles almost everyone in the room of well over 100 raised their hands. He was one of the many healers who attended to Wayne Marinelli during his cancer journey, gently providing relief from chemo symptoms and then some very spiritual sessions during Wayne's hospice time. I think he may have called on Wayne recently to do his annual rim to rim Grand Canyon hike. Yes, Steve was determined to do the hike despite his stroke history and when his hiking partner was unable to make it, he made the rim to rim walk on his own.

There is a delicate line between life and death. Steve knew it well and he was not afraid to cross that line. Having survived out of body experiences and the stroke, he talked openly about passing into the next frontier. Music chosen by his family and played yesterday at the service included "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan, "Graceland" by Paul Simon, "Wildest Dreams" by the Moody Blues, "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton and a beautiful Italian version of "Time to Say Goodbye." Last week as he was helping his room mate and friend, Rev. Konrad to carry a very light, but awkward futon frame upstairs in their apartment. He collapsed and left his body in the arms of Konrad (a former Catholic Priest and current Unity Minister). The metaphor of carrying the 'light, but awkward frame upstairs" and "dying in the arms of the angels" was not lost in the deluge of tears and laughter shared during the service. Steve was a one of a kind man with a heart of gold. He will be missed and remembered always.

Greetings Further Shore Friends,

Grief is a funny thing. It ebbs and flows. It is complicated. Grieving the loss of a family member takes patience and time. Like everyone else, our family is learning about grief. The winter was hard on our elder canine, Jake. We thought we were going to lose him in March. Well-meaning friends suggested getting a new dog to keep Jake company and we were firm in saying, "no more dogs." Then last week I was driving in Kachina Village and spied a raggedy little black dog dodging cars. She was stinky dirty, scared, starving, with thickly matted ears and underbelly. I stopped the car and got out; she crouched low and came whimpering toward me. I picked her up, anxiously wondering what I would do with this lost little girl. She could certainly NOT come live with us.

Long story short: Her name is Madison, a beloved family member after just one week. Jake is getting a new lease on life and seems more happy, healthy, and calm than he has been since Emerson left us last August. Robert and I are doting new parents. We all know she is not Em; but she is a blessing and a gift to help us mend our grieving hearts. We know that our happiness doesn't rely on what is outside of us, but little Maddy has contributed greatly already to an inner peace; a softer place for grief to teach us. ~ Warmly, Aleia

We thank the Wildflower Bread Company and all of you who participated by coming out for dinner on April 12th! Special Thanks to Meg Leander and Judith Waidelich for planning this great event. Volunteers Rich Garcia, Michele Lytle, John Mead, Grace Marks, Nikki Baldwin, Rick Miller, David Grandon, Frances Riemer, and Penny Cook did a fine job running food and bussing tables that night. Funds Raised support the TLC Client Support Program, proving natural therapies for persons with end of life concerns.

Wednesday, May 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the McGee Auditorium (Flagstaff Medical Center) Further Shore will have presence at "Cancer 101 - Serving Your Clients With Cancer". This is a FREE crash course for the non-medical professional, sponsored by the Arizona Cancer Coalition. Naturally Caring TLC for Care Givers is a FREE Workshop ~ "Bowenwork Self-Care and Music as Medicine" will be offered on Wednesday, May 18th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Thorpe Senior and Community Center 245 N. Thorpe Road. In this two part workshop you will relax with Bowenwork® and learn useful self-help "moves" for your survival tool box. Then enjoy music practices to promote wellness in yourself and others. The Series is funded in part by the Arizona and Flagstaff Community Foundation, Forest Highlands Foundation and Flagstaff Medical Center. Pre-registration is appreciated, but not required. Questions? Wednesday May 26th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. we will be tabling at the National Senior Health & Fitness Day at the Flagstaff Aquaplex. This annual FREE event features information, activities, tours, and workshops for seniors. This year the event will utilize the full scale gym, indoor walking and running tracks, climbing wall, weight room and swim area. Don't miss it!

Wayne's House is Open for the season. Welcome to Erika Kessenich, Pam Hopkins, David Grandon and Rich Garcia as new Quality of Life Advocate (Koala Bear) volunteers. They were the inaugural group for Bridging the Gap this year. The next open training is June 3rd and 4th.

Like everywhere across the country, Spring is blossoming here in Flagstaff; beautiful flowering trees, daffodils and tulips are bending in the gusty winds. While it is exciting to be a part of the world awakening from its winter sleep, pollen can make Spring really tough for those with allergies. A few natural tips for coping with those itchy eyes and sneezy days:

Stay hydrated; drink plenty of water. You might try Recharge, Gatorade or coconut water to replace electrolytes.

Avoid wheat and dairy products; they are mucus producing and can increase that stuffy head feeling.

A few drops of peppermint and lavender essential oils mixed with water and sprayed on your pillow can help your relax and clear your head.

White Tiger Balm can be rubbed onto the back of your neck, under ears and on throat to ease tension and help you to sleep with an easier breath.

Happy Spring Equinox from Further Shore!

Pine Canyon is hosting a fund raiser for TLC Client, VTara Ruscher on April 2 from 5-8 p.m. VTara is facing tremendous and ongoing medical bills due to a cancer recurrence. Tickets $30 includes dinner, live and silent auction and music by Meghan Callaghan. Contact theclub@pinecanyon.net for reservations.

Wayne's House will be opening on April 9. The season kicks off with Bridging the Gap (registration closed). The next session will be May 20th and 21st. See our calendar and website for details.

Tuesday, April 12th the Wildflower Bread Company will host a fundraiser for Further Shore called "Neighborhood Nights." When you eat dinner that evening at Wildflower and present Further Shore's printed invitation, they will donate 15% of your check total to support our programs! Your purchases helped to raise funds that will be utilized for our TLC (Tender Loving Care) Client Support Program, offering natural therapeutic services, counseling and advocacy for persons with serious illness and end of life concerns. 5% Wednesday happens once a month at New Frontiers so watch for that day to support other wonderful Flagstaff charities! The Naturally Caring TLC for Care Givers Series begins on Wednesday, April 20th from 3-5 p.m. at the Thorp Park Senior Center. February is National Heart Disease Awareness Month! These few steps will help you to reduce risk of a heart attack:

Take a brisk walk and get your heart rate up several times a week
Quit smoking and avoid second hand smoke
Eat a balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight
Keep your stress down with yoga, meditation, or other relaxing practices
Know your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides)

FirstFriday Art Walk on January 7th from 6-9 p.m. at the Headline 2000 Salon 113 E. Aspen ~ featuring original art by VTara Ruscher. The show will continue through February 28th. VTara, recently featured in an article by the Noise, is a friend of Further Shore, cancer survivor and visual artist. She plans to be present on Friday evening to visit with patrons.

Snow has already fallen here on the San Francisco Peaks and we are getting ready to wind down our activities for 2010. We want to say "thank you" to all who helped make the Bone Dance a great success. Here is what your support helped us to accomplish:

There were 10 healing retreats offered at Wayne's House including special programs for our Tender Loving Care (TLC) Clients.

Bridging the Gap trainings were held for fourteen volunteers and family care givers.

Further Shore practitioners offered over 1200 hours of patient advocacy, volunteerism and therapy services to TLC clients

Naturally Caring-TLC for Care Givers provided valuable self-care training to over 60 care givers. With help from the Flagstaff Community Foundation, Flagstaff Medical Center,Forest Highlands Foundation and YOU, we were able to offer these workshops FREE to attendees. In November these same foundations awarded a grant to repeat the series in 2011!

We participated in numerous health education forums, and calculate our outreach includes over 500 seniors, disabled adults and caregivers

In Loving Memory

At this time of the year Further Shore remembers with deep gratitude Dr. Edward and Cornelia Speth who made a bequeath to Wayne's House in July. The evergreen on the north side of the home is now dedicated to them, living on in our memories always.

We also remember a special community friend, Mr. Raymond Lynch, recently passed on. Ray brought a smile and a positive word to everyone he met. He offered himself tirelessly to seniors and care givers in Flagstaff. He lived out loud and will be dearly missed.

Our deep condolences go out to Eileen & Dan in loving memory of Nyla (their feline companion of many years)

Also to Teresa, Cliff, Grace, Jim and Mary on the loss of their canine friend, Maggie. When our companion animals pass over, it is just like loosing a child. May our friends find comfort in the quieting winter's rest and in happy memories of these loving beings.

Invoking "Grace"

As winter comes sweeping in and we begin to deeply rest and reflect on the years' gifts and challenges, I want to remind everyone our mission is about assisting people who face grave medical challenges. We meet these courageous beings where they are along their journey and hold a space of loving compassion; a witnessing space. Whether working one on one, in the classroom or at Wayne's House, our goal is to leave our judgments at the door; because at the heart of Further Shore's work is the idea that death is not a failure, people who are ill have not done anything wrong or bad, and that grace is something that can experienced, learned, practiced and shared even in the most troubling of times. This poem was our dedication at the Bone Dance, I hope you will enjoy its depth and I hope your holiday season is warmly blessed in grace.

Personal Farewell

Fall is usually full of activity here on the mountain. The nights have grown suddenly very cold and there is a crisp feeling in the air that reflects the changing season; a season of quieting. On a very personal note, Robert and I are gently adjusting to one less heart beating in our home. Ms. Emerson Lee, age 12, passed into spirit on August 24th. With her usual grace and dignity, Emmy showed us every kindness and so much love as she traversed a short, valiant cancer journey. She 'told' us via our animal communicator that it was important for her to demonstrate "not suffering" and "joy and gratitude". She certainly did fulfill her wish.

Jake, Robert and I are attempting to demonstrate these same qualities now. It is harder for us humans. We miss her physical expressions of abiding affection that only a canine can offer. We miss her bouncing off the wall when we come home, tossing her toys up in the air and then pouncing on them, singing with Jake in the morning and a thousand other things about her. The love that she offered every day without waver and without demand helps to sustain us as does the outpouring of love we have received from family and friends. She will never be forgotten and she has made us better humans. May all beings be so blessed, with love, Aleia

Further Shore Late Spring News ~
Happiness is a calm, gentle breeze! The winds have been howling in Flagstaff and all across the USA as we made our way to upstate New York to celebrate my mom's 80th birthday. Lake Ontario has been making a big splash almost daily since we arrived. The beauty here is, as always, amazing. It is hard to believe we are half way through our visit already. We will be going off line again June 2nd and arriving back in Flagstaff on June 7th. I have been reflecting on the winds of change and hope that all your transitions are happening with ease and grace. Best, Aleia

In Memory ~

Milorad (Misha) Vlahovich passed on April 10th at age 94. He is survived by his wife, step son and son. He is a WWII survivor, having fought against communism in Yugoslavia. He would inspire his son with this Serbian saying "Courageously forward, victory is ours."

Dr. Edward Speth who passed into spirit on April 15th. Dr. and Mrs. Cornelia Speth were dear friends of Wayne's House. The large spruce tree on the north side of the yard are dedicated to their generosity and care.

Francis Pembrook who passed on May 1st after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed by wife, son, daughter in law, grand daughters and other family members.

We also honor the passing of Casey (my mom's 16 year old dog) and Bobby (my sister's amazing kitty). . . both recently departed over the Rainbow Bridge and leave the hearts of those they loved with joyful, memories.

The Bridging the Gap retreat and training for June is full. If you are interested in this important work that will help you learn to care for yourself or others at end of life, please see our calendar for other dates this Summer.

The Llumination Marathon
Retreat and Training is scheduled for August 12-15. There is still room to register for this life-changing event. Learn to be a facilitator or attend as a Seeker.

Naturally Caring-TLC for Care Givers Session #2 will take place on Thursday, May 20th. Join Michele Lytle in learning how preparing and eating food with awareness can support your well being. The session will be held from 2-4 p.m. at Abrio Family Services and it is FREE to the public. The series is partially funded by the Flagstaff and Arizona Community Foundations, Forest Highlands Foundation and Flagstaff Medical Center.

Wayne's House is finally thawed out and we are planning some wonderful sessions this summer. Aleia will be offering Bridging the Gap three times this Summer. This is a prehospice training for anyone supporting a loved one in illness or at end of life. She will also offer The Bucket List and Marathon Llumination Quest and Facilitator Training at Wayne's House. Dates and fees are set for a sliding scale; see the Calendar Section of our website for more info.

The Naturally Caring-TLC for Caregivers Series was a big success on April 15th~ ! Thanks to Abrio Family Services for hosting to FREE workshop which is funded in part by the Arizona and Flagstaff Community Foundations, Forest Highlands Foundation and Flagstaff Medical Center. Stay tuned for the next workshop on May 20th, featuring Michele Lytle of Lytle's Ladle. She will be cooking up some wonderful food and helping participants to recognize the value of true nourishment.

Aleia & Robert will be on travel and off line from April 25 through May 2. Aleia will be keeping in touch from the Lake House in Rochester, NY. and will continue to guide our excellent practitioners service to our Flagstaff and Phoenix TLC clients. Watch for the Late Spring Newsletter in Mid-May.

Further Shore Spring News

"Yea, the sun is out!" That is what people are saying up here on Sacred Mountain. At least it looks like Spring on the sunny side of the street. On the north side of Wayne's House there is still a 15 foot blanket of snow, but things are starting look a little less frozen over all. Elk Meadow in Kachina Village is melting fast and looks like a small lake; the Pumphouse is gurgling and there are springs bubbling up from under the earth along the trail. It is truly beautiful to behold this much water in the high desert.

Spring is the time to renew yourself to conscious living. Take advantage of the warmer weather to get outside for a brisk or leisurely walk, enjoy bird watching or bud blooming! Spring cleaning can also be very rewarding. Take some time to dig into that pantry or closet to see if you REALLY need what is hiding in there. If you don't need it or use it, pay it forward; you will enjoy the sense of spaciousness. Now is also a time to add more fresh greens to your diet or get into vegetable juice. Stretch, breathe, let your body wake up to a new season. During this blossoming season, please also think about conscious transitions. Recently at the Compassion & Choices conference in Sedona participants were reminded about a wonderful booklet called Aging with Dignity - Five Wishes. This simple booklet helps you to express in your words how you would want to be treated if you were unable to speak for yourself to due to illness or injury. Robert and I will be traveling to upstate New York from April 27-June 5 to honor my mom's 80th birthday. Further Shore's work will continue here in Flagstaff under the care of our wonderful TLC practitioners. While we are away, there will be some repairs happening at Wayne's House, but we plan to be ready for retreats again in June.

Greetings
from the most snowy Flagstaff! We have received many feet of the white stuff since winter set in here on sacred mountain in early December. Wayne's House wants to thank neighbors, Tom and Sue for giving us a shout out on Sunday. While the south side of the very steep A-Frame receives enough sun to keep the snow off, the extra foot of snow received over the weekend put the north side into avalanche mode! Robert and I braved the storm to go clear the roof and after about two hours and tons of shoveling, saved the chimney from toppling. Yikes - Just one of the many fun things about winter at 7,000 feet! As we witness the days lengthening ever so slightly, we are grateful for the returning light. In Memory

This season has seen many goodbyes. Our sympathy and love go out to the family of Joe Sanchez who passed on December 21st. Joe was a bright light in our community and as the inn keeper for the Aspen Inn Bed and Breakfast always extended a warm welcome to guests from all over the world. As a member of the Flagstaff Communicators, Joe helped to forge many special relationships. He loved his work, his family, friends and community. His memorial service was held at the Nativity Church; his teen aged children and wife spoke of their love and abiding knowledge that he is not really gone from their hearts. He will be deeply missed.

We wish to also extend our heartfelt love and sympathy to the human parents of Motor the amazing cat and Leo the wonder dog. Both recently passed into spirit and leave behind a legacy of unconditional love and friendship. During this passage time I spoke with both parents of the large "space" that our companion animals fill in the home; how much they fill our lives. A friend, in New York, offered this wise advice: "When the space feels empty, take a moment for a deep breath and a fond memory. Don't give away their toys too quickly, pack them into a bag and put them away for awhile until the sting of loss passes. Maybe that special toy, leash or bed is something that you really want for another companion or to share with a friend when the fog clears. The Bach flower essence of Walnut is useful for changes." Thank you, Sally for this wisdom. Motor and Leo, you will be forever held in our hearts with love.

First, spirits were high on Saturday night at That's Life - A Bone Dance 2009! You may have been there: setting up, tearing down, greeting guests, taking photos, selling raffle tickets, watching a silent auction table, helping to check in or out, singing BEAUTIFULLY (Clarence, Jimmy and SPOKES, Jennifer, Meghan), placing memories on the altar, sharing with new or old friends, dancing gently or wildly, celebrating, loving. . . You may have been unable to attend, but sent your love, silent auction items, good wishes, sponsorship, prayers, or a donation. Whether there or not there, you all have been important to the dance being a brilliant success; for this, I give thanks. On behalf of those we serve, I offer deep gratitude for the team work and passion that flows into this mission-related, beautiful celebration of life and the lives of those remembered. Extra special thanks to Leilani for her amazing effort in filling tables with her loved ones.

We wish to again thank the Arizona Community Foundation, and Flagstaff Community Foundation collaborators (The Forest Highlands Foundation and Flagstaff Medical Center) for grant awards that will help us to fund the "Caring Naturally-TLC for Caregivers" program in 2010.

Lastly, on October 27th the Flagstaff Planning and Zoning Board approved the conditional use permit for Wayne's House with a unanimous vote. The permit is for five years! What a blessing for those we will serve.

Can you believe it is October already? Like the local squirrels, everyone seems to be bustling to prepare for the coming winter. Here in Flagstaff, the great Ponderosa Pines are shedding their needles, sunflowers, standing eight feet tall in some places are bowing their heads, and the winds are calling for warmer sweaters and scarves. This is a season of endings; gardens offer their last gifts, red, gold and brown leaves flutter away from oaks and aspens, leaving a fragrant tapestry beneath our hiking boots. We hope that you will remember to breathe and rest during this busy season. A mug of hot cider, a crackling fire, and sparkling conversationwith loved ones will go a long way to keep you warm when winter nights comecalling. In the news from here ~

Knowledge is power ~ Further Shore news briefs are coming to you in hope that you will feel connected to our mission and find peace in these messages. Because education is our primary goal, we will be doing a full website overhaul this winter and making plans for a FREE lecture series entitled "Naturally Caring" (offered April through November of 2010). The series will teach simple, holistic techniques that care givers can use for their own self-care and for their loved ones. Special Thanks are in order to The Flagstaff Community Foundation, The Arizona Community Foundation, The Forest Highlands Foundation and Flagstaff Medical Center for their generous grant support of this program!

Did you know? While researchers have long known that caregiving can have deleterious mental health effects for caregivers, research also shows that caregiving can have serious physical health consequences as well. Studies have found that caregivers may have increased blood pressure and insulin levels, impaired immune systems, and may be at increased risk for cardiovascular disease among other adverse health outcomes. Those caring for elderly or terminally ill patients may have the added stress of anticipatory grief or 'wellness guilt'. What can you do? A simple "time out" can bring you peace and restore balance. Set a timer for 6 minutes. Sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes, Breathe in a long deep breath; pause, then breathe out slowly. Repeat this several times, until you feel a relaxation response. Breathe naturally until your timer rings. Open your eyes and turn off the timer. With eyes still open, take one more minute to breathe. SMILE for this minute. Stand up and stretch tall. Feel better. Simple. . .time-out!

The Further Shore family wishes congratulations to Madrone (Julie) Schutten and Rich Rogers on their beautiful hand fasting ceremony that took place October 3rd at
the Museum of Northern Arizona. As a newly committed couple we wish you both abundant love, good health, fabulous adventures, and much joy!

Further Shore wishes to extend sympathy and love to all in our community who will dearly miss Maria Ruiz, the soul of the Southside and Morning Glory's sweet spirit. Maria was always interested in our work, always offering a loving word of support to our clients. She and I had several talks about death and dying; the end of suffering; the Buddhist path of compassion. She will be remembered for her love, her enthusiasm for healing, helping and sharing, and of course, for the beautiful food. Maria, may you find the further shore to be peaceful, serene and full of love.

We also offer sympathy and support to the family of young, Dawson Merrick, who at age 10 crossed into spirit with courage and wisdom that touched our entire community. Board member, Penny Cook, shared in the outpouring of love that spilled over at Christ Church on September 26th at Dawson's memorial service. The image of a hundred little boys with baseball bats, caps and/or karate gear as 'honorary pall bearers' had the whole board weeping at our meeting yesterday. Bless you, Dawsom, for teaching us about dying with
dignity. May you find the perfect diamond where you are now.

Wayne's House is undergoing a transformation. Because of the high winds last Spring, it was decided that the roof needs to be replaced. Please join the FS board and staff in prayer for a swift, beautiful and gentle transformation. The new roof will include insulation which will make the house much easier to heat and keep cool in the summer. We are closing the residence again for winter beginning December 12th. August in the high country smells of rain and smoke, sounds of hummingbirds and thunder, and today shimmers under numerous sparkling rainbows. We hope where ever you may be, that the early harvest of summer's bounty is blessing you. In the news from here ~

It is with sweet memories and fondness that Further Shore bids farewell toJudy Peterson. Judy served as a nurse at the Flagstaff Medical Center for many years and was an avid dog lover. An organ transplant and cancer survivor, she was our inaugural TLC Client, always presenting the most gracious, loving presence and an award winning smile. She passed on August 7th surrounded by her sister and several friends. Several of our FS practitioners offered gentle touch and comfort care to Judy over the years. We were all inspired by her courage and sense of purpose. It was my honor to serve as her advocate, and to call her friend. ~Summer News from Further Shore~

Happy Summer Solstice everyone! I think everyone in Flagstaff is talking about how unusual our Spring has been. We had rain in May, super cool temps so far in June and it looks monsoon season has already begun. The good news is: fire danger is low and the meadows are full of green grasses and a riot of colorful wild flowers. The gusty spring winds removed several shingles from the roof at Wayne's House. We are now eagerly awaiting an assessment about roof repair (or replacement). Last year's unscheduled flood and renovation has us on high alert to keep the house in good repair. The retreat facility is open for the season and features several facilitators offering excellent information and healing retreats. {See Calendar below}

About Llumination the Quest - While Aleia is not currently facilitating the Quest, several others (trained by her) are! We welcome Jennifer W., sound healer, to the FS practitioner team. Jennifer brings a full resume of healing gifts for our clients. She is also a professional blues/jazz singer and has generously offered to help us plan a concert fund raiser.

Because of numerous requests, Aleia will be offering a series of mini retreats for healing grief. The retreats will be held on three Saturdays this summer from 9 a.m. to noon. The Vernal Equinox is almost here with its promise of new life. It looks, smells, and feels like Spring is finally in the air for Flagstaff, Arizona. After LOTS of snow, we are beginning to see the earth again in Kachina Village. There are even a few crocuses popping out in town. Wayne's House has been quietly "resting" for the Winter months and will reopen again in April. Hats off to the Master Gardeners who will be tenderly grooming the yard and coaxing the beauty out over there.

We have been busy envisioning Spring Retreats (see schedule below). Despite the cold temps our practitioners have been active supporting TLC Clients with counseling, music therapy, massage and advocacy support. These clients are so grateful for our ongoing support in health. Last week one of our TLC Clients entered hospice care at home. Further Shore staff and volunteers will continue offering support for her and her family care givers during this transition.

Special thanks to Joe and Nina Marinelli for the donation of a large screen TV for Wayne's House. More special thanks to New Frontiers Natural Foods and Hastings Entertainment for generously inviting us to table at holiday time with Recipes from the Food Doctor and Friends! We sold a good number of cookbooks during that time and they are still on the shelf at both places. Visit Hastings at their new venue on the corner of 4th Street and 7th Avenue. Gratitude as well to New Leaf Counseling Center on Verde Street! Donations collected at their 2008 Wellness Education Series were donated to Further Shore. We are proud to be part of the Family Care Giver Discussion Series "The Aging Puzzle. . . Making the Pieces Fit" On February 27th we offered a panel presentation entitled "The Gentle Gift of Comfort Care" to 45 seniors and family care givers. The panel included Dona Clark (FMC's Palliative Care Team), Katy Montoya and Dawn Kurtz (Northland Hospice), Marlene Letvin (RTA Hospice), Penny Cook (Abrio Family Services) and myself. The presentation outlined our need for comfort during various stages of life. The next event is April 23rd from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Federated Church. "Life is a Work of Art - Celebrating Your Silver Spirit" is NAGA's 25 Year Anniversary conference. A wonderful program featuring Mary Mareck, MSW is planned. Winter News

Dear Further Shore Friends,

Happy Ground Hog Day! Here in Kachina Village the snow is still deep. It is a great relief to have Wayne's House in resting mode for the winter. The snow was so abundant and FROZEN that we would have been hard pressed to open those driveways in December or January. It looks like February and March may bring more moisture, a good thing for high deserts.

January is traditionally my Sabbatical time. This year I was able to create time for writing. I am working on both a book and a template to describe what I do for our TLC Clients. I believe I am a "Quality of Life Advocate" (Qu oLA pronounced like Koala Bear) We are gently assisting 5 TLC clients at this time. I am seeking an Assistant Koala Bear (training, flexible hours, hourly wage TBD). I am going to continue with the Sabbatical through the end of March. I am not offering private sessions during this time, but will place anyone on my Reiki list and make referrals if needed.

Beneath winter snow and ice, seeds are contemplating rebirth in the Spring. Plans are in the works to offer "First Weekend Retreats" from April through November. Facilitators and topics to be announced.

I will offer another MARATHON LLUMINATION Retreat and training in late April. There are currently 2 spots open for trainees, 2 or 3 spots open for Seekers. If you are interested or know someone who is, please contact me ASAP. I will not do the training with less than 4. (postponing until November if that is the case).

There is a Care Giver Support Group on February 10th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Loyalton. Facilitator is Michele Lytle. A wonderful opportunity to discuss care giver concerns in a quiet setting with snacks!

There will be a workshop for Seniors and Care Givers at the Adult Center on Friday, February 27th from 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This NAGA/NACOG sponsored workshop is FREE and entitled: "The Gentle Gift of Comfort Care" ~ Learning when, where and how to find quality of life support during any stage in life. Panelists include Penny Cook, Marlene Letvin, Katy Montoya, Donna Cook, Aleia OReilly

Further Shore welcomes Frances and Marie to our Advisory Board. We would welcome at least 3 additional Advisory Board members for 2009. Please let me know if you have interest.

Our sympathy and compassion go to Penny as her father passed on December 17th. Penny has experienced several other clients and friends passing since then. Keep her in your prayers please.

Congratulations are in order on the birth of baby Sky born on December 29, 2008 to board members, Eliot and Janine.

A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old)

(this is a touching email I received)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Further Shore honors the memory of Caryl Westbrook, author of Angels in My Kitchen - Divine Dessert Recipes. This message from David (Friend of FS/Wayne's House) arrived to the FS email box today. You can find Caryl's cookbook at amazon.com

Last evening I heard the sad news that my good pal Caryl Westwood suffered a massive heart attack and passed away. Caryl was alone in her home in Santa Fe and was found shortly after she passed. She was 54. Caryl was set to write the intro to my new cookbook Mandala Desserts- she was the best-selling author of Angels in my Kitchen and my co-author on The Dad’s Cookbook.

Caryl had been a long time student of the Course of Miracles and was an ardent teacher and promoter of the principles and faith based teachings. Her magical laugh and sincere eyes will live on with me forever…..it’s hard to imagine that she won’t be here in October as she planned. I wanted to share this news with you and in case you didn’t know Caryl…..just let this be a guide post and reminder to all of us to reach out more often and love those that make our lives better.

Caryl is in heaven’s kitchen today preparing a feast of delights for all our ANGEL guides……and I just know she is smiling and loving every minute of it! Upon hearing the news of her passing- I called her publisher to see if they would offer a third printing of her cookbook- I am asking everyone I know to purchase one in her memory!!

Help Needed

The Flagstaff Community Partnership (FCP) is helping individuals and families with special needs (developmental disabilities, mental illness, traumatic brain injury) with the First Responder Smart Card program. Over the past 12 months, FCP has helped approximately 70 individuals/families/group home providers be prepared with the Smart Card On-Site. This card and address registration alerts 911 dispatchers that the call might involve someone with a developmental disability, mental illness, or traumatic brain injury. This helps the first responders like fire dept., ambulance and law enforcement to be better prepared for their interaction with someone who has a special need in the home.

FCP is looking for someone to help with a short survey to each of the families who have registered their address. This is telephone work and involves asking questions about whether the family has called 911 and how the Smart Card On-Site helped (if a call was indeed made). Each phone call may be from 3-15 minutes in length depending on if a 911 call was made in the last year. FCP will pay the caller/interviewer $2.00 for each completed survey OR volunteer help is always welcome by this nonprofit. Contact Molly Parrott at 928-526-5156 if you want to help.

Randy Pausch, exuberant lecturer, dies

Randy Pausch, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2006, passed away July 25, 2008. He was 47.

Randy's diagnosis in 2006 however, did not deter him from delivering a fired up speech on life and living during his farewell presentation in 2007 at Carnegie Mellon where he was a computer science professor. His moving speech caught people's attention and he was soon invited to speak at many events including a televised appearance on Oprah. Since then thousands of people have viewed his speech on the internet and followed his story.

Summer News

Excellent news: Wayne's House is almost fully recovered from the destructive flood that was discovered on March 17th. We had a small re-dedication ceremony on Wednesday, July 9th. Robert will be posting these latest photos very soon. The last touch was to have the gas stove re-stalled in the great room. This took place on Thursday morning and much to our dismay, the stove was damaged in the flood as well. So the final inspection and re-opening cannot take place for another week or two. The space is so beautiful and welcoming. It is my hope that this home will continue to serve as a haven and retreat for those facing transitions of all kinds. We are grateful to Russ Warner of Big Horn Construction for his most excellent and speedy work on the remodel. See pics below.

Further Shore offers sympathy and caring thoughts to all friends who lost loved ones in the helicopter accident on June 29th; as well to all County Zoning employees who are missing their friend, Fran. May these transitions be gentle for all involved.

Lastly, when we were working in Rochester, NY it came clear to me that it is time to write another book. The book already has a title and a life of its own... It is still in the cocoon stages so I am holding the title quiet while I clear my slates as much as possible to create time for the writing. I will continue to be the director of operations for FS/WH and to serve the TLC clients. This feels easier with all our new staff! I am hopeful to have others step forward to facilitate retreats at Wayne's House and/or to assist me in the Client Advocate role. Robert, Jake, Emerson and I made it home safe and sound (notwithstanding the tornado warnings and 100 degree temps, 60 mph winds across this great nation!). Greetings from Aleia at the Lake House!

Robert and I have been here in Rochester for 21 days now. Lake Ontario continues to offer immeasurable beauty in every moment. Colors and mood change rapidly. The weather here has been unseasonably cool so the flower blossoms are holding on longer. On our arrival there were huge trees with white flowers against a cold, gray sky. It was like entering fairy land. Here by the lake, the lilacs are just now opening. There are brightly colored tulips, pink dogwoods, deep purple lilacs, and delicate white cherry blossoms everywhere.

On a daily basis, we see geese, swans, seagulls and ducks. On lucky days, we see the gosling chicks waddling after their parents. We have seen eagles, hawks, and purple martins; deer, fox, bunnies and lots of squirrels (makes Jake and Emerson happy!). Robert is snapping breath-taking photos.

Once again, I have been graced by the opportunity to bring Further Shore's mission to NY. My first couple weeks found me assisting with in-home hospice care for a man I have known for 40 years. Herman (father of my dear high school friend, Mary) made his transition in a most amazing manner on Mother's Day. Being present for his passing was a gift I will forever cherish. The family further blessed me by requesting that I officiate the graveside memorial service. My brother, Tom, played the guitar and sang Amazing Grace as part of the ceremony. A full military service came first. . . a 21 gun salute, presentation of the flag and Taps. A beautiful honoring.

During the hospice care time, it became painfully clear to me how over burdened the local hospice nurses are. There was a long list of things that happened that were challenging, stress producing and frustrating for the care givers. I provided hands-on support to the process that helped the family through. When I asked the visiting nurse about her case load, she reported that all the area hospices have serious personnel shortages and that her case load was twenty-five to forty at a time! No wonder the care was lacking. I also just heard that the federal government has cut funding that will help hospices nation wide. This makes it all the more important that the private sector learn about caring for the terminally ill; for families to be aware of what happens when we make the final passage.

My heart is full from our time here. We will be leaving on June 1st for the drive back to sacred mountain. Susana has been doing a fabulous job handling FS business in my absence. She is managing care for our TLC Clients with ease and grace. She recently made a presentation to the Blue Thong Society, a local fund raising group. The group made up special baskets for each of our TLC Clients that Susana will be delivering sometime this week. We are so grateful for this kind of community support!

Susana is also keeping an eye on construction at Wayne's House. While it is progressing in a good way, it is still not clear when the grand re-opening will take place. Thank you to all who are keeping this process in your prayers and hearts. Also thank you to those who have made contributions to Further Shore that helps us to continue with this important work.

Most of you know that Aleia and I are back in Rochester, New York for the month of May. While Susana is holding down the fort in Flagstaff, Aleia is continuing her Further Shore work here in Rochester. Interestingly enough there is much for her to do here - it seems like we arrived just in time.

Upstate New York is beautiful in the spring time and I am doing my best to capture some of it. I have started a gallery with pictures from our journey.

Help Area Teens to Help ACS!

Flagstaff High School Peers, a Peer mentoring group, is trying to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The Relay for Life is an event to raise money for Cancer research and education and to honor those who have fought the battle with cancer. They are offering Luminarias for a donation of $10.00 each. The luminarias are lanterns that will be lit on the night of the Relay, a night when the students will stay up all walking in order to remember and honor the constant struggle of a person with cancer. The luminaria's can be decorated by the donor in order to honor a particular person or lit to honor all those who have struggled with cancer. Any kind of donation will be greatly appreciated. Wrist Strong and Drying Out

I am happy to be typing with two hands again!! My cast was removed on April 10th and not a moment too soon for me. X-Rays showed good bone healing. I have a brace to wear for 2 or 3 weeks and am guided to "go easy" with my use for that amount of time. So I will not be offering massage for a while longer. I can do Reiki and am so happy to be practicing on Jake. Thank you all who sent good wishes for my healing. I know it made a huge difference!

The following is the Spring Newsletter ~ I really want to invite you to reply to this wonderful blog. It is easy and fun. Thank you to Amanda for being the Keeper of the Blog and helping to share our good news in this way.

Flood Update ~ It has now been 4 weeks the discovery of the water at Wayne's House. . .from the water bill it looks like 3,000+ gallons of water leaked into the home. The whole first floor has been gutted (sub floor, insulation, walls, etc). The bathroom in the studio is also gutted. It took 3 visits from the demo crew to uncover all the standing water beneath sub-floor, then State Farm had to assess the damage and issue a repair check. State Farm has been thorough and fair. The settlement provided a check to cover the Further Shore rent for two and half months; more will be given if the work takes longer than this. We are grateful.

The check arrived the day before my cast was removed last week. Because the damage is extensive, the mortgage company is involved in this renovation. It has been an all-encompassing event. We have a great local contractor to manage the project. We have chosen to slightly alter the floor plan to allow more space in the Great Room and kitchen. Choosing lighting, flooring, carpet, cabinets, counter tops, paint, etc. etc. etc. has been time consuming and bittersweet. Wayne is, I am sure, watching over all this to ensure quality work and care is given to this sacred healing space.

Retreats and Presentations ~ These will of course be suspended at Wayne's House until the work is done. We will provide and update in about a month. Meanwhile, those seeking solace and / or comfort support are welcome to inquire about summer dates for retreats that will be held in a beautiful, fresh new space.

A BIG "THANK YOU" to NAGA for the opportunity to speak at the annual conference last week. This popular event was attended by 75 seniors and care givers. We enjoyed aroma and music therapy and sharing ways that we can all "Wake Up and Smell the Roses".
Mark your calendars for May 23rd when the City of Flagstaff presents Senior Health and Fitness Day at the Radisson Hotel from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.. We will be sharing an information table with Lytle's Ladel (from My Heart to Your Kitchen). This is event is free to those over 50 years of age.

Travel Schedule ~ This renovation project comes at a time when Robert and I will be traveling to Rochester, NY to visit my family. This is the 2nd annual trip and my mother is really eager to see us again. We will drive "Grandfather" (the old Chevy Station Wagon) and take Jake and Emerson along. We are renting a cottage on Lake Ontario only 7 minutes from my mom's home. During our trip, I am training two Llumination facilitators and taking other aspects of Further Shore's mission to friends and family members there. I will be offering light touch, counseling, education and hospice support by appointment. I will also be open for phone consults from May 2-30th. We will return to Flagstaff on June 5th.

Farewells ~ Ahhh, yes, some major transitions for our Further Shore friends. We are wishing fond farewells to 3 of Further Shore's Founding Board Members: Melissa and husband, Todd (off to Phoenix where Melissa will work at a YMCA), Devon (going to study spiritual psychology and nutrition at Bastyr in Seattle) and Susana and her husband, Chris (moving to Dallas to support Sus's aging parents and begin a new adventure). Again, it is amazing how things occur in such perfection and divine order. Susana has agreed to live in our home and take over my duties as Lead Advocate and Care Coordinator for our TLC Clients, as well to watch over the renovation project at Wayne's House. She and Chris will be moving in the day we leave for New York (April 28th).

TLC Client Update ~ Your thoughts, donations, and prayers are always welcome for our TLC Clients. Arranging wholistic support for these special ones is my joy.

A special note of thanks to those who have made specific donations to provide services for VTara. She has begun chemo treatment in Sedona and is grateful for the ongoing FS help. Her courage and strength inspire us and all she meets.
Our Navajo client, DD will have a healing ceremony with a traditional Medicine Healer sometime in July. Donations are welcome to support this event (funds will help to pay for the Healer's services and for supplies and travel). On a recent visit with her Medicine Healer, she was told: "Further Shore people have helped you to remain here to see your children grow. I wish they could come out here to work on the reservation." DD tells me that she is not so afraid of dying now and is hopeful that her symptoms will continue to heal so that she can at some time be a helper or volunteer to other FS clients.
TLC Client, Judy, has new care givers living in and they are committed to staying long term. What a relief for her and of course for her 4 canine companions!

New Frontiers Natural Foods has graciously offered to help Further Shore/Wayne's House to help cleanup the recent Flood! We have been chosen as recipients of 5% Wednesday in the month of April! That means that 5% of all sales on Wednesday, April 16th will be donated to Further Shore and Wayne's House! If you are already a regular shopper or have been thinking about shopping at a healthy food store, making your purchases on April 16th will raise funds that support the Further Shore mission which is to provide education and resources for living well and dying with dignity.

Our clients are individuals and families with chronic or serious illness and end of life concerns. Most do not have funds for the kind of support we provide: bodywork including massage therapy, acupressure, and Reiki, emotional support, advocacy for bridging traditional and nontraditional medical care. I know the bigger issue for you to to see Wayne's house with such damage.

Remember this,

It is spring...spring is a time of rebirth...all things are new again. Maybe it is time for Wayne's House to become truly a home for the clients you serve. Maybe his hand from above directed the house to be new, fresh, alive, clear for new possibilities. A clean slate for you to paint the second half of this story. Maybe not full of the "old" Wayne...but a new Wayne, fresh and new, young and healthy. Beautiful and new....for all to see rebirth does take place.

Remember, life gives us lemons, alot......keep making that lemonade!

A Letter from Christie in Response to the Flood at Wayne's House

This must have been so difficult to come home to. When I lived in Africa, there was a flood in my home. Most of the measly few possessions I had were destroyed. Basically, it was just me left.

I know you've contemplated the many meanings of this event, so maybe you've thought about this, too: So many people who come into that space as clients are leaving everything behind for good. In fact, I can't imagine a better analogy for getting a lousy diagnosis than a huge flood that destroys everything that was there before! And all the tearing apart energy, the demolition, all that is EXACTLY what it feels like to have doctors (even kind, gentle natural ones) flood in and begin treatment, to have friends and family (even kind, gentle ones) take over and clean, cook, and have to run your life.

To have to change your life, giving up what you want to do, for what you have to do. To have everything you thought was you and yours turned upside-down and inside-out. Because we all cherish our bodies, it is grief beyond grief. And our physical surroundings--home, job, personal belongings-- are just extensions of our bodies.

I think it's fair to say that until someone actually IS the one going through it (ie, not a caretaker or support person), it will always benefit them to deepen in their understanding of it, even through seemingly "outer" events like this. So, because you have committed yourself to helping others through such life changes, I think this experience will benefit you tremendously. I think you can really use it to deepen in compassion. My dear friend, I wish you peace of mind and joy as you continue to contemplate "Wha' happened?"

Flood at Wayne's House

I am sad to report that while Robert and I were on vacation, there was a small leak at Wayne's House that turned into a big leak. A compression valve failed (maybe due to it freezing and thawing, maybe just due to its age). The water poured into the house for days. We discovered this on Tuesday night March 18th.

The next two days were somewhat dream like in that we had to move all furniture, treasures, art supplies, books, etc. up to the loft. Calls to the plumber, State Farm, Roof Dancer etc. were made to begin assessing the damage and drying out. Servepro Restoration came in to demo (yes, demo) the main floor (living room, dining area, hearth, all kitchen cupboards, tiling, floor and counters, laundry room and hallway. Suffice to say that this was very difficult to watch. And watch I did. My tears unleashed when they tore out the meticulously laid white tile counter tops; Wayne's handiwork. All the while they were literally destroying this sacred space, I kept thinking "there is a divine plan . . . let me just be present, awake and grateful."

After my brief but REAL emotional burst, it was time to swing into action and turn this event into an amazing opportunity.We continue to marvel at the timing of this discovery . . . Spring Equinox, Full Moon, Easter! Renewal, rebirth, remaking of intentions are all thematically pertinent here. Wayne has been whispering and shouting in my ear about all this. Our partner in ownership of the house, Peter, drove up on Friday. This was great timing to have him with us. We explored the many spiritual messages of this event and are still in process. We met with a contractor today to discuss the renewal.

Still typing with one hand, this is slow going. With broken wrist, I cannot do the work I have cherished for 23 years. . . writing and healing touch. As well, we cannot hold any retreats at Wayne's House until a complete renovation takes place. This is a time for me to become very quiet and to listen to the creator about my contribution in the vessel called Wayne's House and Further Shore. The work with TLC Clients, Llumination Quests and trainings, public speaking, the monthly meetings, Bone Dance planning, and cook book sales will continue.

Some board members have suggested we have a fund raiser to assist with renovations. Since Robert, Peter and I are the home owners the renovation is our responsibility (and State Farm's). A fund raiser would certainly help to support the budget's losses that will occur due to my injury and this flood. My personal plate is fairly full, so I will await guidance from the board; we meet on March 30th to discuss this and other matters. I am so grateful to those board members who have offered their loving thoughts and prayers during this time . . . and especially to Robert & Peter.

The work we have done in the last 2 years at WH has been profound and life changing for those who have come. Programs that open with prehospice education have revealed countless gifts and opportunities for participants to release fear and anxiety around grief, life, death and afterlife. Thank you for your prayers and support during this transitional time.

Because of the recent accident and flood (!). . . I am happy to have the Llumination Quest as the one activity that can still happen as a fund raiser for Further Shore. I am grateful and blessed to have a training plan for the Llumination Quest and to have three trainees in process. Pam (Phoenix/Tucson), Grace , and Susanne will join Susanna and I, becoming facilitators as part of the Further Shore Llumination Quest Team. this note will be short b/c i am typing w/one hand

Yes, i fell on the ice on Sunday a.m. in the latest snowstorm!

my left wrist is fractured and i have a big orange cast on it. pain is really ok (reiki) and i am healing fast. hard part is not being able to do stuff like button clothes or type. It will be like this for about 6-7 weeks.

We leave for vacation to Oahu, HI on tuesday March 4th. I will not be on line til we get back on 3/14. no swimming or snorkeling 4 me but i am so happy to go to the sun and rest for real!

Hello everyone, I have had a busy week a follow up with my surgeon, a visit to a ND Dr Mark James and to Dr Steve for some Chinese tea. Lots of advice and ideas my head is spinning…low carb diet a long list of herbs and supplements and more appointments and more internet research and reading. But the good news is I am feeling stronger and sleeping well. More good news my PET scan came back clear no signs of any cancer spreading to any other places in my body. And my liver looks good. It’s been 4 wks since the 2nd surgery and he gave me the ok to drive and at 6 wks I can take a bath.

On Wednesday the 6th I was blessed to have several close friends come over and we held sacred space for dreaming a new dream. This day was a new moon and a special eclipse day. It was truly magical to sit with these women and share our dreams and hopes and also see my total healing and connect to memories and the power of our grandmothers in our lives.
Pamela Hopkins kindly offered to drive me to the Kunzang Palyul Chöling (KPC) Buddhist communities first annual Lunar New Year Festival of 1000 Lights & Flowers. That was on Thursday, February 7th at the Amitabha Stupa Peace Park in West Sedona. It turned out to be a long day for me but a very powerful experience. I felt truly blessed to be there and there were a lot of people…it’s a beautiful place. I may even get a special invite to meet with the Rinpoche at another time. Christie got permission for me to cut in the line and go ahead….it felt funny but it was a long line. I did walk up to the stupa and that felt good. The Rinpoche made a funny joke because I had my credit union jacket on…..he said he would give me some credit….(it’s a very deep and powerful inside joke). And Christie tied the protection string and as she helped me to a chair she reminded me to remember always that all my breathes matter now………wow……

Today, Feb 9th is my son, Joes birthday he is 19 wow time really goes by quickly. I am so blessed to be surrounded by so many loving friends and this little spiritual community filled with healers as well as my loving family. My daughter is expecting a baby in July so I will soon officially become a grandmother.

I am still doing my research on finding a second opinion and will make a decision on this very soon. However; the cancer centers my insurance is willing to send me and pay for are still medical model……so I am hoping to coordinate something with a ND and do some complementary treatments in addition to chemo. This has been a difficult decision and it’s taken some time to even consider doing chemo however I do think it is for the best and it is within my spiritual practice to do this. Please understand and hold space for me to do the process and the healing. The original oncologist wanted to do chemo for a two week set and a series of 12 sessions however this could change. And in between the chemo I can coordinate the other modalities like, massage, chiropractic, jin shen, acupuncture, and vit-c IV boosts, etc.

I want to thank every one for all the wonderful things you are all doing or have done for me from flowers to cooking to sending Reiki and prayers. And all the generous donations that covered the Navajo medicine ceremony but there are even more monies to cover other treatments etc for during the chemo. It is truly an amazing and heart opening experience to surrender to what needs to unfold and to open to all the love present. The biggest thing I want to communicate is to please see this as a opportunity for me to experience more harmony not only in the world but within my self……it all happens one person at a time from within,,.,,,, so many of the cancer stories talk of winning a battle or it being a good fight to the end…..for me its not about that, its about giving up the fight and opening to the stillness, peace and oneness within……..it is already there within me……so let go and go to the place with in……. I will meet you there.

Community Healing Dance

Join Canyon Movement Company for a Community Healing Dance this Friday, February 1 @ 5:30pm. This dance was created by Anna Halprin who named it her Planetary Dance and used it to promote peace and healing within communities (photo from the American Dance Festival). The movement is simple (run, walk, stand) and geared for all ages. We will have live drummers as accompaniment and will start with a gentle warm up. Blessings for VTara

I am writing to bring you an update our friend, VTara. I am blessed and honored to be a part of my friend, VTara's sacred walk at this time. I bring this information in the spirit of love and hope for her full recovery. VTara had surgery on January 1st. It was appendicitis that sent her to the ER on New Year's Eve. The surgeon found a mass in her colon and so removed a section of colon along with the appendix and gall bladder. On January 8th she was able to go home for one day. On January 9th she went back to FMC for a second surgery. The pathology showed third stage cancer (meaning that it was not local to the mass and colon, but had gone to lymph nodes). The surgeon removed several nodes and re-sectioned the colon for clean and safe margins.

VTara is now resting at home. She feels confident that the cancer has been removed. She has great faith and gratitude for her surgeon's work and will be visiting with an oncologist in the very near future. It is a "one day at a time" journey. Her spiritual practice, family and friends are most important as she processes this news and charts her course. For now, she is only eating Gerson Institute recipes, and has been consulting with her doctor about the next steps. Further Shore is going to assist to coordinate her journey. Many of you have called to ask what you can do, so here are some things:

I. VTara has requested a healing ceremony with a medicine man. Clarence and Kat have made the arrangements for this and it will be happening in the near future. As far as I know, the ceremony is private for the family only. If V wants to invite you, you will receive a call. There is a significant fee involved with bringing a traditional Navajo healer to Flagstaff for this kind of ceremony. Further Shore is going to pay the healer and purchase any supplies needed for the ceremony. If you would like to help with the financial aspect, you can make a tax deductible donation in any amount to Further Shore, Inc. II. VTara is open to all sorts of healing modalities and to visitors. Some visitor's tips: Massage may be contra-indicated, but energy work is not. She is grateful for prayers, long distance Reiki or other distance healing as well as the energetic therapies (Reiki, Jin Shin, Reconnection, Polarity, foot reflexology, etc.). V is not the only one in the home. Joe and Chuck and sometimes Kris, Cager and their two dogs are there, so she requests that visitors call first.

Be mindful that she may need visits to be short or longer as per where she 'is' that day. Ask her! Be mindful about talking. . . she told me that she is flowing with the feelings, sometimes wanting and needing to talk; sometimes wanting quiet time, sleep or meditation. Again, if in doubt, ask. She is currently eating organic oatmeal gruel (a Gerson recipe to soothe the intestinal tract). Soon, she will be adding soups, broths and organic juices. She may appreciate help with juicing, making the soups or shopping for the organics.

Chuck and Joe are grateful for the offer of food too, but b/c of their varied tastes they are not requesting food at this time. VTara tells me that they do like pizza and lasagna though, so maybe give a call if you want to bring something like that by.

III. Dr. Christie, aka Ani Sangye, has placed VTara's name on the prayer list in Sedona, Arizona. She will also dedicate to VTara at the her Sanga's Sunday gathering this Sunday, January 20th. When the Sanga gathers for prayers and offering/dedication of food this Sunday, it will be in honor of VTara's clear mind, ease of spirit, and healing of body. Christie, by the way, is healing well, still off the oxygen and filled with gratitude for her new home in Sedona. Keep her in your prayers please for swift sale of her home and slowly re-entering into her sacred work as a "portable practitioner" (Chiropractor and Buddhist Nun). That is it for now. Please continue to join me in the knowing that VTara is well and whole, here and now and in all dimensions and on all levels of being. For she, who has given so much to our community, may we now give back to her in love, compassion and understanding. More on this after January 29th.

This message is to wish you a prosperous and healthy New Year. Thank you so much for supporting the mission of Further Shore and Wayne's House with your thoughts, prayers, love and financial contributions. 2007 was a very full year with many accomplishments: Recipes from the Food Doctor and Friends, 11 Gentle Transitions Retreats, ongoing support for several TLC Clients, public speaking at 7 different venues, and of course the Bone Dance. Your gifts make all this possible. The clients are so grateful.

January is a month of retreat and reflection for me; also a time when I work on the book I am writing. I am not planning meetings, private sessions or social time until February. Please note that I will not be checking email again until January 29th unless something needs to be shared about VTara's process.

Before I "go off line" I wanted to let you know a couple of important messages. First ~ A very special friend, VTara, had surgery on New Year's Day. She's at Flagstaff Medical Center and will likely be there for several days. She had pain on New Year's Eve that elevated quickly and intensely, so she went into the ER. The doctors thought it was appendicitis and upon surgery found a suspicious mass and inflammation of other organs. She is requesting long distance Reiki and prayers. VTara was sitting with Wayne when he breathed his last breath in the body. She is a divine soul and dear sister, friend. Please hold her and her family at this time.

Next, our Board Secretary, Eileen, had foot surgery on December 19th. She is at home recovering and getting around on crutches. Pain levels fluctuating and being the busy girl she is, it is hard to keep her leg elevated and herself still!

FS Advisor, Penny, fell on the ice flow at the train station in December while trying to greet Santa Claus with her two grandsons. Penny broke her right arm and had to have surgery (bionic woman now has metal in her arm/wrist). She is recovering, still dealing with pain.

Please continue to keep TLC Client Judy in your prayers as her care needs have increased and her situation is changing daily. There have been a number of persons who have stepped in to help including state agencies. This is a blessing for her and the 4 doggies who love her. Special Thanks to Further Shore Advisor, Penny and Abrio for being an important part of her team even during the broken arm thing!

Last but certainly not least, TLC Client Christie is doing great in Sedona! She is off the 24-7 oxygen and looked radiant when I saw her on December 21st. Your prayers have helped!

Climb to Conquer Cancer - Beautiful!

Yesterday, August 18, 2007, four Further Shore Board members donned their Wayne Commemorative T-Shirts and joined the 4,000 strong crowd of hikers for the American Cancer Society's Annual Climb to Conquer Cancer. The event is held as a fund raiser for ACS and for those walking, it is an opportunity to remember and honor friends and family who have been touched by this disease.
We were up at 5:15 a.m.; sleepy, but excited! Driving "Grandfather" (the Chevy Wagon affectionately named by Wayne), we picked up Jill Rundall at 6:30. Next stop was at Laura Fox's place to meet up with Eileen Westphal. Laura kindly loaned her Wayne Shirt to Eileen for the hike. Then we drove to Flag High School to park Grandfather and catch a school bus to the bottom of Snowbowl Road where hikers started the 7.5 mile walk up the mountain. We were eager to begin, but paused for a photo op in a field of amazingly bright yellow sunflowers. Our white shirts with a large photo of Wayne and the word "LIVESTRONG" in yellow text on the front stood out among the sea of creamy coffee colored shirts. It was 7:50 a.m.

There were people of all ages, shapes and sizes, small children,and babies in stollers and back packs. I was immediately enchanted with a stroller containing tiny twins. . . a boy (Liam) and girl (Addison). At only seven months old, they were being pushed and pulled along the 7.5 mile route by their parents. They were quite adorable; mom and dad were perspiring in the early morning sun! There were runners, joggers, brisk walkers and those walking slowly. I saw a young woman with a cast on her leg, an elder Navajo couple dressed in traditional clothing. The many children were in bright lime-green shirts skipping, singing, and laughing along with their parents!

The energy of the crowd was at once peaceful and enthusiastic, happy and bittersweet. Whether hikers were introspectively quiet or chatting away with others, we all shared in common one thing; we had been led to share a few hours of our lives with others who have been touched by cancer. Never mind the TShirts, water stations or give aways. Never mind the grilled chicken served at the top or the rock band playing 80's tunes. What touched me and maybe in some way touched us all was the spirit of connection that equals a feeling of not being alone in our grief or our hope about cancer. The day was a celebration of life and courage.

With about two miles left to go, I was feeling pretty quiet, walking alone and not talking much to preserve my breath and drink in the beauty of the aspens. At that point, we were blessed by a visit with Daily Sun Reporter, Hillary Davis! She noticed our unique TShirts and asked if she could walk and talk with us for a while. I welcomed her questions; some of them were more difficult than others. We laughed and cried as we walked and talked. I was grateful for Jill's soothing hand on my back and shoulder. The last two miles flew by. I arrived at the top knowing about Hillary's beginning career as a journalist, her amazing cancer-surviving grandma, and the loss of her best friend in a bike accident. When we got to the top at 10:50 a.m. (a mere three hours for the entire walk), Robert and I did not eat the chicken, but did enjoy the salad course. The four of us managed to shout a few lines of "We're Not Gonna Take It Any More" along with the rock band and then we plunged into the sea of brown shirts waiting to board the busses for home. I saw a butterfly, a man juggling, Liam and Addison and their folks, the elder Navajo couple. Everyone seemed satisfied and a little tired. As we boarded the busses back to Flag High the ACS volunteers were there, cheering us on toward home, thanking us for hiking, and shouting "See you next year!" And I am thinking they probably will.

A Word of Welcome ~ “Boy is it HOT.” You hear this often lately, in southern Arizona, here on sacred mountain, and all over the U.S the heat is on! In Flagstaff, at 7,000 feet above sea level, the ponderosa pine forest is normally a cool respite from the desert heat. Record temps have made the news everywhere and we are not an exception. Monsoon season has not quite begun, but the smell of rain is in the air most afternoons. At Wayne’s House we see full greening of the Russian olive trees, cottonwoods, and aspens. The air feels electric with summer storms on the horizon. Even though the dew point is up, it is important to remember to stay hydrated during this hot, dry season. Drink plenty of water and keep snacks handy when traveling by car or taking a walk. Dehydration symptoms include dry mouth, clammy skin, dizziness, and muscle cramps. Severe symptoms such as vomiting, dark urine, and fainting will require immediate medical attention. Beat the heat by taking an afternoon nap; your body will appreciate the rest.

As some of you know Robert and I recently traveled to upstate New York. It was an auspicious time to be in the cradle of my birth. I was blessed to be able to ‘say goodbye’ to my beloved Aunt Dot; and also offered support to TLC family members Pat and Laura (see below). Robert took the most amazing photos of Lake Ontario and some will be seen on our website, truly reflecting the Further Shore’s beauty, color and grace. During this season of fullness and sunshine, may your days be blessed with the light of love that abides through all transitions.

Honoring and Dedications
Further Shore honors the memory of Dorothy Lembach, who passed over on May 26, 2007 at age 90. “Aunt Dot” to me, “mom” to her five children, “sister” to my mom, this amazing woman blessed my life in ways too numerous to count. The day she died five swans swam silently past our lake house in predawn mists. I was privileged to have three special visits with her in the weeks before she passed. My cousins honored me with an invitation to speak at her memorial service. That day, when I stood before my cousins and other loved ones, I had to take a big gulp of air before opening my mouth to speak. My heart felt like it would burst with all the love, laughter, and gratitude for my aunt. My heart also knew grief in that moment; the sorrow of loss that touches us when those we love change form. Even though my faith is strong and my work in this world to assist the dying and bereaved, it was deeply humbling to feel this empathy for those who grieve; to feel this vulnerable, this “human.” So for you, Aunt Dot, I say “Thank you, again and again and always.”

Further Shore honors the memory of Laura Anne Collins. I had the privilege of ministering to
Laura and her mom, Pat Bradshaw while in upstate New York. Laura was a bright light to all she met. In my visit with Laura, she told me that she was getting tired and was hopeful for her pain to lessen and her heart to open. We meditated silently together in a sweet glow of love. After a long journey with a rare melanoma she moved into spirit on Summer Solstice, June 21, 2007. She will be dearly missed by family and friends and remembered with great love.

Further Shore also remembers with love: Mr. George Giffi who crossed peacefully over on May
14, 2007; a kind and gentle man, a veteran, father, husband and grandfather extraordinaire. Our prayers for health and grace are with Judy, Christie, Susana, and Sue.

Because of the very personal nature of their circumstances, we cannot share details about their journeys. But they want you to know how blessed they feel to have our support and love. A family with
extreme need and many end of life concerns has come forward for TLC assistance and also requested a Gentle Transitions Retreat at Wayne’s House. It is our honor to assist them. Your contributions help us to provide ongoing care to clients with serious illness and financial need.

Summer Ratatouille submitted to Recipes from the Food Doctor and
Friends by Wayne’s long time friend, Linda Carr of West Virginia. Enjoy it hot as a main or side dish, add grilled tempeh or tofu for an additional protein punch. For an appetizer, try serving it cold or at room temperature on crackers or pita chips.

2 T. extra virgin olive oil
1 onion (red or yellow), diced
1 green pepper, chopped
1 large eggplant, cubed
2 medium zucchini, cubed
2 - 3 tomatoes, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups mushrooms, sliced

Garden fresh basil or oregano to garnish and taste

Heat Olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions and pepper until onion is
translucent. Add eggplant. Sauté 8 - 10 minutes. Add zucchini, cover, reduce heat, cook for another 10 minutes. Add garlic, tomatoes, and mushrooms; cook for another 10-12 minutes until all vegetables are tender. Season with salt, pepper and hot pepper sauce to taste. Customize with any vegetables you like. Red pepper instead of green; or hot peppers (for a little heat). Yield 4-6 servings.

Llumination Questing to Discover Your Truth
Join Aleia for a Llumination Quest and help support Wayne’s House. Much more than a board game, the Quest helps to open a portal to expanded consciousness and enlightenment. I have seen amazing events occur for seekers after play.

During the game, you have opportunity to hone and sharpen intuitive skills, compassionate speaking, and careful listening; receiving spiritual comfort and guidance for yourself and your
fellow players. The place for play is at Wayne's House. Game playing for 2-4 people takes 3-4 hours. Sliding scale of $25-50 per person or an equitable barter. Create your own group or play with new seekers.

Gone From My Sight
I am standing on the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch her until at length she is a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each
other. Then someone at my side says, There! She's gone!" Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and she is just as able to bear her load of living weight to her destined harbor. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “There - She's gone!,” there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There - She comes!" And that is dying.

A Word of Welcome ~ Spring is here! Plum colored fruit tree blossoms, baby green buds, soft grey catkins, and bright yellow forsythia adorn the yard at Wayne’s House. The mountain is still capped with sparkling white snow from a late storm. It feels like everything is waking up after a long winter’s nap. The internal time of winter has given way to some exciting news for Further Shore. Recipes from the Food Doctor and Friends is almost ready for printing! Many volunteers have worked to type in recipes, edit, and research the printing process. My husband, Robert, did the typesetting. This labor of love contains 130 vegan recipes, Wayne’s Words of Wisdom, a story about Morty the Tomato, and more! We hope you will want to order several.

Another wonderful update: Devon Moughan-Phillips, massage therapist and Shannon Dooley, Holistic Counselor have graciously agreed to offer services to our TLC Clients on the sliding scale. This is a tremendous help for those with ongoing need for support during illness, bereavement or personal transitions. THANK YOU, Dev and Shannon!

During May and part of June, I will be away from Flagstaff, bringing Further Shore’s work and mission to upstate New York. I will be checking phone and email messages, but will not be offering sessions or retreats in Flagstaff until after June 18^th. April 22^nd is Earth Day ~ take a moment to reflect on the beauty here; recycle, plant a tree or some bulbs in memory of a loved one or just say a prayer for the earth and her creatures. Honoring and Dedications

Further Shore honors the memory of Marilyn Pinheiro. I had the privilege of ministering to Marilyn and her family last year as she courageously fought brain cancer. Marilyn worked at the Second Chance Animal Shelter and was active in her church. She was beloved by many humans and four footed ones. She passed into spirit on December 26^th. The memorial service held at the Nativity Church was so beautiful. Her daughter, Amy, invited everyone to wear something sparkly because Marilyn loved sparkles. As a result, there were about 250 sparkling attendees. We listened carefully as Father Patrick spoke eloquently about the distant shore where Marilyn would be met by angels and God. She will be remembered with great love.

Further Shore honors the memory of Daryl Contryman, who passed over on March 2, 2007. Daryl was an accountant with Sam Litzler and Larry Gardner. A Flagstaff resident since 1974, he loved hiking the Flagstaff trails and was much appreciated by his clients here. He survived by his daughters, grandson, sister and three brothers. He touched the lives of many with kindness and will be dearly missed.

Further Shore also remembers with love: Miss Girly Face Kitty, Indy, beloved dog friend, Paloma Roja, beloved horse (1989-2007), and Tripod, an amazing three legged dog. Our prayers for health and grace are with Judy, Barry, Christie, Bill, Jayne, and Laura.

Community Update

NAGA is holding its 16^th Annual Conference on Aging in Northern Arizona. It will be held at the Elk’s Club 2101 N. San Francisco Street from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20^th. The fee is $10 and includes lunch. Speakers include Stan Clark, Ed.D, Psychologist and Mary Lou Brubaker, Pharmacist/Physician’s Assistant NCCHC. If you have a movie you feel speaks to our mission, please send us a review! This quarter's pic is Milagro Beanfield War. The 1988 film stars Sonia Braga, John Heard, and Ruben Blades. The story is set in Milagro, New Mexico, a town of only 426 mostly Latino residents who find themselves in a struggle for water rights. A strange wind is blowing in Milagro as meet an enormous pig, an octogenarian, and a ghost. This film won an academy award for best musical score. The story is a heart warming reminder about taking care of our earth.

Recipe from the Food Doctor

The Infamous Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 sticks Earth Balance
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup sugar
3/8 cup water
¼ cup amaretto
2½ cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 pkg. chocolate chips

With hand mixer, cream together Earth Balance and sugars. Add in amaretto and water. In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking soda and salt. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix well. Fold in chips. Use tablespoon and drop onto dry cookie sheet. Bake at 375° for about 12 minutes

Llumination with Aleia

As minister, therapist and counselor, I am always on the look out for ways to provide support that is innovative, fun, and inspiration of personal truth for the seeker. One of the methods I have found useful is a board game called Llumination Quest, which is based on the Tarot. It is amazingly insightful. Much more than a board game, I feel that it helps to open a portal to expanded consciousness and enlightenment for players and have seen amazing events occur for seekers after play.

During the game, you have opportunity to hone and sharpen intuitive skills, compassionate speaking, and careful listening; receiving spiritual comfort and guidance for yourself and your fellow players.

I see that Llumination is part of Further Shore's mission in two ways: 1) It is a spiritual inquiry that helps us to live well and fully; increasing consciousness about the limited time we have here on earth. 2) It is a means to raise funds that will help keep the Further Shore mission going. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

That's Life ~ A Bone Dance - 2006

On October 26, 2006 Further Shore held its first annual Fund Raiser "That's Life ~ A Bone Dance" at the Canyon Clubhouse in Forest Highlands. The black and white themed ball featured the music of Clarence Clearwater and Limbs Akimbo, a delicious Mexican Buffet, and huge silent auction. Attendees brought photos of their departed loved ones, and created a beautiful memorial altar to honor and celebrate them. Funds raised provide education, support, and respite for people facing serious or chronic illness and end of life concerns. Further Shore also provides prehospice information and grief support. A Word of Welcome ~ Winter's long nights are cold here on sacred mountain. The stars are amazing! We have been blessed by snow, with a promise of more to come. Wayne's House looks like a picture post card; the frosted roof and deck rails glisten in the morning sun. It is a time of quieting and burrowing in for the local wild life. It can be quite the opposite for most people at this time of year. While the blur of holiday social activities may have you spinning, try to plan some quiet time to reflect on the blessings of life, the beauty of friendships, and bountiful spirit all around.

As I write this newsletter, I am officially in sabbatical mode although it does not feel much like that yet! I love to write and it has become clear to me that when facilitating retreats, networking, and seeing clients, my "writing cap" will not stay on! So, each year, it is my tradition to take 3-6 weeks off to retreat, rejuvenate and spend time writing. My goal this year is to complete "The Seekers Guide to Further Shore" and the "Recipes from the Food Doctor and Friends" text for publication in March.

Typically, I check email Tuesday through Friday. During the next six weeks, I will be checking email infrequently, so if you have a need, please call me at 928-525-2910. I will continue supporting a few Further Shore TLC Clients with phone support and prayer. May you all find peace in this holy season.

Client Updates and Dedications

This note is from a Further Shore client:
“I want to say thank you for everything and share what took place later that day after we were at Wayne’s House. I had a very close friend who was sick for the past 8 months with a Hodgkin’s lymphoma .I had not heard from them in a couple of weeks so I wasn't aware things had gotten worse.

We were sitting in the Mars diner in Sedona around 8 30 p.m. eating dinner. I started to get a very uneasy feeling (at the time I didn't know why). So we finished eating and went back to the hotel to sleep. I dreamed of my friend Lisa, whom I’ve been very close with for 20 years. In my dream she was healthy and happy and the rest of the dream all I was doing was hugging her husband Steve who is also very close to me. I woke up at 5 in the morning, very upset and told Beth about my dream. About 10 minutes later my cell phone rang and I didn't recognize the number, but I knew what it was. I reluctantly picked up the phone and it was an old friend telling me that my friend Lisa had passed away at10:30 New York time which was 8:30 our time the night before.

So I firmly believe I felt her passing to the next plane. It was truly one of the most moving experiences I have had. I got to see her healthy and happy in my dream one last time. And then I think the hugging in my dream was me helping to console her husband. Lisa was 36 and had 3 beautiful kids 13, 7, and 5. I want to thank you for the work you did with us. Thank you (and Wayne) very very much... with love, Mark D.”

Further Shore honors Sharon, a long time cancer survivor, who, after her August visit to Wayne's House, entered hospice care in the Phoenix area. Her bright spirit, courage and smile linger in my mind today. She told me and the other retreat attendee that it was important to "get yourself right with God and everything else would be OK." She passed peacefully into spirit on November 22nd. We offer dedications and prayers this season to Wayne Marinelli, Tom O'Reilly, Sharon Kowalski, Lisa Lincoln, Marilyn Pinheiro and beloved cat friend, Wolf.

Eliot’s 1000 Mile Ride

Our Client Liaison, Eliot Schipper, completed his 1000 mile bike ride from Wayne’s House in Flagstaff to Oakland, CA. The plot chronicles the intersecting lives of several individual’s losses, loves, and triumphs. The performance of the youngest cast member is guaranteed to bring a tear and a smile.

Calling All Volunteers!

After serving almost 50 clients this year (at Wayne's House, home and hospital visits, via phone and email), I have discovered the need for ongoing support for those facing very serious health challenges. Persons with life threatening or chronic illness often find themselves in dire straits financially. Most health plans do not pay for services such as those we provide: emotional and spiritual support, transition planning, compassionate listening, resources, education, and referrals for natural and wholistic comfort care. In this first year of service, I have been the primary facilitator and follow up care giver for clients. It is clear that volunteers and paid practitioners are needed to continue with this kind of care.

To that end, in 2007 Further Shore will offer several opportunities for volunteers. You may choose to help with gardening, housekeeping or cooking for Wayne’s House retreats. Office work, fund raising or event planning are also options! If you are a certified hospice volunteer, you may serve as Lighthouse Keeper for our TLC Clients. Wayne's House - Update

Due to your generosity, we were able to hold fourteen retreats for thirty three individuals at Wayne's House in 2006. Truly a blessing for each and every client!

Special Thanks to Caitlin Flaherty at PeaceScapes Landscaping for being our team leader for the yard cleanup on November 4th. Caitlin drove up from the valley with a lot of tools and know how. We knocked down all the weeds, pruned trees, turned the compost pile, and repaired the drive ways. Lunch was delicious. Thanks to Patricia Pease, Dianna Ford, Annie Martin, Todd Reneir, Eileen Kenny, Dan Westphal, Robert McCarter, and Caitlin for this work of love! (photos will be on line by January 1st).

In September several of the Coconino County Planning & Zoning Commissioners toured Wayne's House and on September 26th they granted a three year permit to continue our good work at Wayne's House. The permit allows up to 12 days per month for Further Shore activities, with a day described as any 24 hour period. This means that day long or over night programs can be held any day of the week; much more flexible and therefore GREAT for our clients.

The neighbor opposition to the conditional use permit that surfaced last year, has transformed. After several good conversations (with Giraffe Ears firmly in place), we have a reached an agreement that satisfies our concerns and the concerns of the neighbors; feeling like we have made new friends in the process. This is a blessing for which we are grateful.

We raised $3,446. 66 and had a grand time.
The music by Clarence Clearwater and Limbs Akimbo was wonderful and the food delicious!
Our Silent Auction had 66 items.

Community Update

Kudos to Shannon Dooley for hosting the Holistic Health Expo in October! The event was held at Coconino Community College and offered information and education about natural health care. Further Shore had a table, Aleia gave the first talk of the day and visited with about 50 guests, ranging from CCC students to faculty and interested community members. Aleia is serving on the Caregivers Coalition team. The team helps to design events that are educational for persons in care giving roles. There will be four events in 2007. The first will be February 9th or 16th and will focus on financial and legal resources for seniors and care givers. Details to follow.

During the quest, you have opportunity to hone and sharpen intuitive skills, compassionate speaking, and careful listening; receiving spiritual comfort and guidance for yourself and your fellow players. Playing evokes clarity, laughter and even tears of letting go or realization of true purpose. There are 4 paths to play on: love, truth, manifestation, inspiration.

Llumination is part of Further Shore's mission in two ways: 1) It is a spiritual inquiry that helps us to live well and fully; increasing consciousness about the limited time we have here on earth (in our current bodies). 2) It is a means to raise funds that will help keep the Further Shore mission going. I am willing to facilitate the game for small groups. The place for play is at Wayne's House. Game playing for 2-4 people takes 3-4 hours. Sliding scale of $25-50 per person or an equitable barter. Create your own group or play with new seekers.

Recipe from the Food Doctor

This soup is creamy and delicious on a cold winter's day. Serve with crusty French bread topped with melted soy cheese.
Fennel and Red Bell Pepper Soup
2 tbsp olive oil
3 red bell peppers, chopped
1 fennel bulb, chopped
1 onion, chopped
3 hot cherry peppers, seeded and chopped
2 tbsp tamari
2 tsp basil
4 cups unsweetened soy milk

Sautee until, peppers, onion and fennel until limp. Add tamari, basil and soy milk. Puree in blender until smooth. Simmer 15 minutes; garnish with fresh fennel leaf.
