Climb to Conquer Cancer - Beautiful!

Yesterday, August 18, 2007, four Further Shore Board members donned their Wayne Commemorative T-Shirts and joined the 4,000 strong crowd of hikers for the American Cancer Society's Annual Climb to Conquer Cancer. The event is held as a fund raiser for ACS and for those walking, it is an opportunity to remember and honor friends and family who have been touched by this disease.
We were up at 5:15 a.m.; sleepy, but excited! Driving "Grandfather" (the Chevy Wagon affectionately named by Wayne), we picked up Jill Rundall at 6:30. Next stop was at Laura Fox's place to meet up with Eileen Westphal. Laura kindly loaned her Wayne Shirt to Eileen for the hike. Then we drove to Flag High School to park Grandfather and catch a school bus to the bottom of Snowbowl Road where hikers started the 7.5 mile walk up the mountain. We were eager to begin, but paused for a photo op in a field of amazingly bright yellow sunflowers. Our white shirts with a large photo of Wayne and the word "LIVESTRONG" in yellow text on the front stood out among the sea of creamy coffee colored shirts. It was 7:50 a.m.

There were people of all ages, shapes and sizes, small children,and babies in stollers and back packs. I was immediately enchanted with a stroller containing tiny twins. . . a boy (Liam) and girl (Addison). At only seven months old, they were being pushed and pulled along the 7.5 mile route by their parents. They were quite adorable; mom and dad were perspiring in the early morning sun! There were runners, joggers, brisk walkers and those walking slowly. I saw a young woman with a cast on her leg, an elder Navajo couple dressed in traditional clothing. The many children were in bright lime-green shirts skipping, singing, and laughing along with their parents!

The energy of the crowd was at once peaceful and enthusiastic, happy and bittersweet. Whether hikers were introspectively quiet or chatting away with others, we all shared in common one thing; we had been led to share a few hours of our lives with others who have been touched by cancer. Never mind the TShirts, water stations or give aways. Never mind the grilled chicken served at the top or the rock band playing 80's tunes. What touched me and maybe in some way touched us all was the spirit of connection that equals a feeling of not being alone in our grief or our hope about cancer. The day was a celebration of life and courage.

With about two miles left to go, I was feeling pretty quiet, walking alone and not talking much to preserve my breath and drink in the beauty of the aspens. At that point, we were blessed by a visit with Daily Sun Reporter, Hillary Davis! She noticed our unique TShirts and asked if she could walk and talk with us for a while. I welcomed her questions; some of them were more difficult than others. We laughed and cried as we walked and talked. I was grateful for Jill's soothing hand on my back and shoulder. The last two miles flew by. I arrived at the top knowing about Hillary's beginning career as a journalist, her amazing cancer-surviving grandma, and the loss of her best friend in a bike accident. When we got to the top at 10:50 a.m. (a mere three hours for the entire walk), Robert and I did not eat the chicken, but did enjoy the salad course. The four of us managed to shout a few lines of "We're Not Gonna Take It Any More" along with the rock band and then we plunged into the sea of brown shirts waiting to board the busses for home. I saw a butterfly, a man juggling, Liam and Addison and their folks, the elder Navajo couple. Everyone seemed satisfied and a little tired. As we boarded the busses back to Flag High the ACS volunteers were there, cheering us on toward home, thanking us for hiking, and shouting "See you next year!" And I am thinking they probably will.

A Word of Welcome ~ “Boy is it HOT.” You hear this often lately, in southern Arizona, here on sacred mountain, and all over the U.S the heat is on! In Flagstaff, at 7,000 feet above sea level, the ponderosa pine forest is normally a cool respite from the desert heat. Record temps have made the news everywhere and we are not an exception. Monsoon season has not quite begun, but the smell of rain is in the air most afternoons. At Wayne’s House we see full greening of the Russian olive trees, cottonwoods, and aspens. The air feels electric with summer storms on the horizon. Even though the dew point is up, it is important to remember to stay hydrated during this hot, dry season. Drink plenty of water and keep snacks handy when traveling by car or taking a walk. Dehydration symptoms include dry mouth, clammy skin, dizziness, and muscle cramps. Severe symptoms such as vomiting, dark urine, and fainting will require immediate medical attention. Beat the heat by taking an afternoon nap; your body will appreciate the rest.

In Further Shore news: Massage Therapist, Barb White, has joined our staff and will be offering services to our TLC Clients on the sliding scale. THANK YOU for this assistance, Barb! The infamous Cookbook is on the way to press. Watch for ordering options on line. Robert has
also added “Kiss the Food Doctor” apparel (aprons, hats and T-Shirts) as another fund raiser for our precious work. We hope you will want to order these fun items.

As some of you know Robert and I recently traveled to upstate New York. It was an auspicious time to be in the cradle of my birth. I was blessed to be able to ‘say goodbye’ to my beloved Aunt Dot; and also offered support to TLC family members Pat and Laura (see below). Robert took the most amazing photos of Lake Ontario and some will be seen on our website, truly reflecting the Further Shore’s beauty, color and grace. During this season of fullness and sunshine, may your days be blessed with the light of love that abides through all transitions.

Honoring and Dedications
Further Shore honors the memory of Dorothy Lembach, who passed over on May 26, 2007 at age 90. “Aunt Dot” to me, “mom” to her five children, “sister” to my mom, this amazing woman blessed my life in ways too numerous to count. The day she died five swans swam silently past our lake house in predawn mists. I was privileged to have three special visits with her in the weeks before she passed. My cousins honored me with an invitation to speak at her memorial service. That day, when I stood before my cousins and other loved ones, I had to take a big gulp of air before opening my mouth to speak. My heart felt like it would burst with all the love, laughter, and gratitude for my aunt. My heart also knew grief in that moment; the sorrow of loss that touches us when those we love change form. Even though my faith is strong and my work in this world to assist the dying and bereaved, it was deeply humbling to feel this empathy for those who grieve; to feel this vulnerable, this “human.” So for you, Aunt Dot, I say “Thank you, again and again and always.”

Further Shore honors the memory of Laura Anne Collins. I had the privilege of ministering to
Laura and her mom, Pat Bradshaw while in upstate New York. Laura was a bright light to all she met. In my visit with Laura, she told me that she was getting tired and was hopeful for her pain to lessen and her heart to open. We meditated silently together in a sweet glow of love. After a long journey with a rare melanoma she moved into spirit on Summer Solstice, June 21, 2007. She will be dearly missed by family and friends and remembered with great love.

Further Shore also remembers with love: Mr. George Giffi who crossed peacefully over on May
14, 2007; a kind and gentle man, a veteran, father, husband and grandfather extraordinaire. Our prayers for health and grace are with Judy, Christie, Susana, and Sue.

Bill is about to celebrate his 65^th birthday when he is contacted by a hallucination (he thinks). Later, Joe Black (Death Itself) enters his life. Joe intends to take Bill with him, but he develops an interest in Bill’s daughter, Susan. This is a powerful movie about not taking life for granted. Pitt plays
Joe Black and offers an amazing insight to the simple and complex concepts of life, love and peanut butter.

Finances and Fund Raising
Further Shoreis currently supporting several clients in need of ongoing Tender Loving Care.
We now have four practitioners and several individuals on the Lighthouse Keeper Volunteer Team to provide counseling, listening, advocacy, light house chores, massage, Reiki and other support for these clients in their homes, in the hospital or wherever they may be. Because of the very personal nature of their circumstances, we cannot share details about their journeys. But they want you to know how blessed they feel to have our support and love. A family with
extreme need and many end of life concerns has come forward for TLC assistance and also requested a Gentle Transitions Retreat at Wayne’s House. It is our honor to assist them. Your contributions help us to provide ongoing care to clients with serious illness and financial need.

If you would like to schedule a program at Wayne's House with your partner, family or with a group, please contact us. With the new flexible use permit, we can accommodate a half day, full day or overnight program designed just to meet your scheduling needs. If you wish to
participate in Gentle Transitions for Women or Cancer Survivors, email your
name, phone number and the date you would like to attend. Please do not let financial challenges stop you from requesting a program, as sponsorships are in place. Minimum co-pay for programs is on a sliding fee scale ($10-$25).

Summer Ratatouille submitted to Recipes from the Food Doctor and
Friends by Wayne’s long time friend, Linda Carr of West Virginia. Enjoy it hot as a main or side dish, add grilled tempeh or tofu for an additional protein punch. For an appetizer, try serving it cold or at room temperature on crackers or pita chips.

2 T. extra virgin olive oil
1 onion (red or yellow), diced
1 green pepper, chopped
1 large eggplant, cubed
2 medium zucchini, cubed
2 - 3 tomatoes, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups mushrooms, sliced

Garden fresh basil or oregano to garnish and taste

Heat Olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions and pepper until onion is
translucent. Add eggplant. Sauté 8 - 10 minutes. Add zucchini, cover, reduce heat, cook for another 10 minutes. Add garlic, tomatoes, and mushrooms; cook for another 10-12 minutes until all vegetables are tender. Season with salt, pepper and hot pepper sauce to taste. Customize with any vegetables you like. Red pepper instead of green; or hot peppers (for a little heat). Yield 4-6 servings.

Further Shore offers several opportunities for volunteers. You may choose to help with gardening, housekeeping, or cooking for Wayne’s House retreats. Office work, fund raising or event planning are also options! If you are a certified hospice volunteer, you may serve as Lighthouse Keeper for our TLC Clients. If you are interested in being a Lighthouse Keeper, please request a volunteer application today!

Llumination Questing to Discover Your Truth
Join Aleia for a Llumination Quest and help support Wayne’s House. Much more than a board game, the Quest helps to open a portal to expanded consciousness and enlightenment. I have seen amazing events occur for seekers after play.

During the game, you have opportunity to hone and sharpen intuitive skills, compassionate speaking, and careful listening; receiving spiritual comfort and guidance for yourself and your
fellow players. The place for play is at Wayne's House. Game playing for 2-4 people takes 3-4 hours. Sliding scale of $25-50 per person or an equitable barter. Create your own group or play with new seekers.

Gone From My Sight
I am standing on the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch her until at length she is a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each
other. Then someone at my side says, There! She's gone!" Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and she is just as able to bear her load of living weight to her destined harbor. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “There - She's gone!,” there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There - She comes!" And that is dying.
